Dorothy Eugénie Brett was an Anglo‑American painter connected both to the artistic world and to influential social circles. Born into an English aristocratic family, she studied at the Slade School of Art and joined the cultural scene of the time, associating with members of the Bloomsbury Group and literary figures such as D. H. Lawrence. Her relationships with these intellectuals shaped her career and ultimately led her to the United States. In 1924 she accepted Lawrence’s invitation and moved to Taos, New Mexico, where she lived for the rest of her life and became an American citizen in 1938. In Taos she worked as an artist—painting and also helping to type manuscripts—and maintained strong ties with the local community and with other expatriates and writers. Her life included practical skills uncommon for women of her class, such as carpentry and maintenance. Her work is represented in important public collections, including the Smithsonian American Art Museum and museums in New Mexico. Brett is remembered both for her paintings and for her presence in a transatlantic cultural circle that linked art, literature, and the image of the American West.
