Dorothy Day was a journalist, social activist, and leader of the Catholic labor movement in the United States, known for combining Catholic faith with direct action on behalf of the poor. In the 1930s, together with Father Peter Maurin, she founded the Catholic Worker Movement and the newspaper The Catholic Worker, platforms that combined immediate assistance for the homeless with nonviolent campaigns for social justice. Her approach emphasized personal and communal transformation, influenced by distributist ideas and Christian social teaching. Throughout her life she published numerous articles and books, including the autobiography The Long Loneliness (1952), and helped establish dozens of hospitality houses that provided shelter and services to the unemployed during the Great Depression. Her leadership sustained and expanded the network of communities and newspapers even after Maurin’s death. Regarded as a central figure in the socially engaged Catholic Church, Dorothy Day left a lasting legacy in aid to the poor and pacifist activism; her cause for canonization was opened in 2000, acknowledging her influence and reputation within the Catholic community.
