Duke of Chartres Robert (Robert Philippe Louis Eugène Ferdinand d’Orléans) was a member of the House of Orléans and an active military figure of the 19th century. A grandson of King Louis-Philippe I, he trained at Italian military academies and fought both in the Italian unification and as an officer on the Union side in the American Civil War. Back in Europe, he took part in the Franco-Prussian War of 1870, serving under a pseudonym and operating on several fronts until he was awarded the Legion of Honor.
Throughout his career he held important posts in the French army, including command of the 12th Regiment of Chasseurs, and served in Algeria during operations against local uprisings. His life and service were shaped by France’s political convulsions: the fall of the 1848 monarchy, the exile of royal houses and, later, the law that definitively removed him from the military rolls in 1886.
On the dynastic front, he married his cousin Francisca of Orléans-Joinville and had five children, among them João, the future Orléanist claimant. A moderate politician by temperament, he promoted the idea of a “reasonable monarchy” oriented toward the future, a stance that influenced restorationist debates among Orléanists.
