Henry, Duke of Cumberland and Strathearn (1745–1790), was a British prince, the sixth son of Frederick, Prince of Wales, and the younger brother of King George III. He was created Duke of Cumberland and Strathearn and Earl of Dublin in 1766 and pursued a career in the Royal Navy, being promoted to rear-admiral and later vice-admiral, although he was subsequently barred from taking active command. Henry’s personal life attracted public attention: secret marriages and amorous scandals culminated in his marriage to Anne Horton in 1771, held without royal approval. That marriage was the decisive episode that prompted the passage of the Royal Marriages Act of 1772, which made the sovereign’s consent a condition for marriages of members of the royal family. Also involved in legal disputes and allegations of extramarital paternity, the duke left a reputation marked by social controversy and by his presence in aristocratic circles. He was responsible for establishing the Cumberland Fleet, a forerunner of the Royal Thames Yacht Club, and played a part in the development of Brighton as a seaside resort. Henry died in London in 1790; his legacy combines honorary military offices, indirect political influence through dynastic legislation, and public notoriety for his private life.
