Dylan Marlais Thomas was a Welsh poet whose lyrical, emotive work left a mark on twentieth-century poetry. He grew up in a family with a strong oral tradition—his father recited Shakespeare—and early on showed talent for English and literature, deciding to devote himself entirely to poetry at the start of his adult life. His literary debut, 18 Poems (1934), established him as a singular voice among young British poets.
Over his career, Thomas developed a style distinct from the social modernism of contemporaries such as Auden, leaning more toward the Romantic tradition and drawing on Celtic and biblical influences as well as elements of surrealism. He became known both for his published work and for his public readings, where a theatrical delivery and an emphasis on orality heightened the impact of his verses.
International fame grew in the 1940s and ’50s, especially after visits to the United States, where his bohemian, performative persona made him a cult figure among later poets, including members of the Beat Generation. His notable output includes collections of poems, short stories and plays, and he also produced work for radio and film.
His personal life was marred by excessive drinking that damaged his health and contributed to his premature death at 39. His legacy endures in the influence he exerted on generations of writers and in the continued presence of his work in anglophone literature.
