S. Robson Walton is an American businessman known for his long tenure in the leadership of Walmart, the world’s largest retail chain founded by his father, Sam Walton. Trained as a lawyer—he earned a degree in Business Administration from the University of Arkansas and a Juris Doctor from Columbia Law School—he joined the family company in 1978 after working at the law firm that represented it. He rose to executive positions and became chairman of the board in April 1992, following the founder’s death.
During his chairmanship, Walton helped oversee the company’s expansion and consolidation as a global retail giant, and he participated in the family governance that retains a significant stake in the business. Listed among the world’s largest fortunes by financial rankings, he was also active in philanthropic giving through the Walton Family Foundation.
Outside the corporate sphere, his public biography includes service on academic boards and a noted interest in collecting automobiles. Because of his economic and family significance, his career is frequently cited in studies of corporate succession and family power in the retail sector.
