Joanna Elisabeth of Holstein‑Gottorp was a princess of the Holstein‑Gottorp branch and, by marriage, Countess of Anhalt‑Zerbst. A member of a dynastic European family connected to Sweden and Denmark, she is best known as the mother of Sophie (the future Empress Catherine II of Russia) and as regent of the principality of Anhalt‑Zerbst from 1747 to 1752, when she governed on behalf of her underage son Frederick Augustus. Born into a network of aristocratic alliances, Joanna spent part of her life in Stettin alongside her husband, Prince Christian August, an officer in the Prussian army. Although married young in an arranged match, she kept ambitions to secure advantageous positions for her children, cultivating contacts that culminated in her daughter’s marriage to the Russian heir apparent. Her personal life included early family losses — several children died in infancy — and later tensions with her adult daughter; incidents at the Russian court led to her leaving and being forbidden to return. After her regency she settled in Paris, where she died in 1760. Joanna Elisabeth’s legacy is tied both to local governance in Anhalt‑Zerbst and to her decisive role in Catherine II’s dynastic rise.
