Ella Young was a poet, storyteller and scholar of Celtic mythology associated with the Celtic and Gaelic Revivals at the turn of the 20th century. Born in Ireland, she became known for turning Irish legend and folklore into poetry and children’s books, including The Coming of Lugh (1909) and Celtic Wonder‑Tales (1910), the latter illustrated by Maud Gonne. Her literary work combined scholarship with popular enthusiasm, making her a notable figure in the recovery of Celtic traditions.
Beyond her writing, Young taught at the university level in the United States, lecturing on Irish myth and tradition at the University of California, Berkeley. Her vivid personality and celebration of legendary creatures attracted California artists and intellectuals such as Ansel Adams and Alan Watts, and influenced local groups like the Dunites.
Politically, she took part in the Irish nationalist movement and in Cumann na mBan, supporting the Easter Rising. After emigrating to the United States in the 1920s she encountered legal difficulties related to immigration. Her legacy survives in archival collections and in studies of Celtic mythology and the cultural links between Ireland and California.
