Fernando Valenzuela was a Mexican professional pitcher who rose to prominence in the 1980s and 1990s. Discovered by the Los Angeles Dodgers, he became a cultural icon with “Fernandomania” beginning in 1981, the year he won his first eight starts and simultaneously captured both the Rookie of the Year and Cy Young awards — a feat unprecedented through 2024. His MLB career spanned 17 seasons, defined by a repertoire built around the rare and effective screwball and an unorthodox pitching motion. Having played for six franchises, Valenzuela enjoyed his best years in California, serving as a key member of the 1981 Dodgers World Series champions and as part of the 1988 roster, despite shoulder injuries that affected later stages of his career. In 1990 he threw a no-hitter before leaving the club, finishing his career with 173 wins and a 3.54 ERA. Beyond his mound work, he was notable for his hitting as a pitcher, totaling ten career home runs. After hanging up his glove, he returned to the Dodgers organization as a commentator and remained a public presence through 2024. His legacy includes the Dodgers retiring his number 34 and being, by cited statistical records, the Mexican player with the highest Wins Above Replacement.
