Francisco I. Madero was a Mexican revolutionary leader, writer, and statesman whose political action set off the Mexican Revolution and helped steer the country toward more competitive electoral processes. Born into a very wealthy family in Coahuila, Madero rose to prominence by challenging the long rule of President Porfirio Díaz: in 1908 he published La Sucesión Presidencial en 1910 and founded the National Anti-Reelectionist Party to oppose indefinite re-election. By denouncing electoral fraud and calling for insurrection in the Plan of San Luis Potosí, Madero catalyzed uprisings across the country—from Emiliano Zapata in the south to Pancho Villa in the north—that led to Díaz’s resignation and to Madero’s election as president in 1911. As president, he represented a moderate force that faced resistance both from conservative sectors and from revolutionaries who expected faster social and agrarian reforms. His government was marked by political instability and divisions among revolutionary allies. In 1913 he was deposed during the Ten Tragic Days and assassinated; his death briefly unified opposing currents against the usurping regime of Victoriano Huerta. Madero’s legacy lies in the central role he played in initiating the revolutionary process and placing democracy at the center of Mexico’s twentieth-century political debate.
