Fritz Sauckel was a Nazi politician who, as General Plenipotentiary for the Employment of Labor of the Reich, was responsible for the large-scale mobilization of labor from occupied territories during World War II. In this role, directly tied to the regime’s leadership, he organized the recruitment and transfer of millions of foreign workers to Germany, mostly from Eastern Europe, often under coercive conditions.
Before reaching the height of his career, Sauckel held regional Nazi Party posts, including Gauleiter and Reich governor in Thuringia; he also held an honorary rank in the SS and a seat in the Reichstag. His position within the party and state apparatus expanded with the escalation of the war, when the demand for labor led to the institutionalization of forced labor practices.
After the Nazi collapse, Sauckel was captured, tried at the Nuremberg Trials and convicted of crimes against humanity for organizing slave labor. He was executed in October 1946. His role is remembered as central to the implementation of large-scale labor exploitation and to criminal responsibility for those practices.
