Garry McDonald is an Australian actor, comedian and satirist whose career spans more than five decades. He became widely known for creating the character Norman Gunston, an awkward interviewer who pioneered the “ambush interview” technique by discomfiting celebrities in satirical interviews. For his work as Gunston he received the Gold Logie and was later inducted into the Logie Hall of Fame.
Beyond comedy, McDonald distinguished himself in dramatic television and sitcoms, notably as Arthur Beare in the series Mother and Son, a role that cemented his national popularity. He has also worked in film and theatre and maintained a steady presence on contemporary shows, including a regular role on the series Offspring.
Outside the arts, McDonald gained recognition for his advocacy on mental health: he was appointed an Officer of the Order of Australia for services to the cause and to entertainment, and served as a director of the group Beyond Blue. His openness about depression and anxiety helped broaden public discussion and contributed to his standing as a prominent cultural figure in Australia.
