George Bernard Dantzig was an American mathematical scientist whose work shaped linear programming and operations research in the twentieth century. His development of the simplex algorithm made practical solution of large optimization problems feasible, with direct impact on logistics, industrial planning, refineries, telecommunications and resource management.

Beyond the simplex, Dantzig worked in statistics, computer science and economics, publishing influential results and contributing mathematical models applied to the social sciences and engineering. A famous anecdote from his academic life recounts that he solved, believing them to be homework problems, two statistical problems then considered unsolved; one of these solutions was later used in scientific publications.

Over his career, Dantzig worked at institutions such as the RAND Corporation, UC Berkeley and Stanford, where he founded the Systems Optimization Laboratory (SOL) and held a chair in Operations Research and Computer Science. He received distinctions such as the National Medal of Science and membership in national academies, and his legacy is celebrated by prizes and by the widespread use of mathematical programming in industry and academia.
