George Smith Patton Jr. was an officer of the United States Army who led American forces in the Mediterranean and Europe during World War II, best known for his campaigns on the Western Front after the Normandy invasion in 1944.
He joined the newly formed Tank Corps of the American Expeditionary Forces and fought in World War I, commanding the tank school in France until being wounded while leading his brigade in combat near the end of the conflict. Patton rose through the ranks to command the 2nd Armored Division at the time the United States entered World War II.
He led American troops in the Mediterranean in the 1942 Operation Torch, later establishing himself as an effective commander through his rapid rehabilitation of the demoralized II Corps in North Africa.
In 1944, commanding the Third Army after the Normandy invasion, he led a rapid and successful drive across France. He was at the head of the forces that relieved the pressure on the besieged American troops at Bastogne during the Battle of the Bulge, advancing his forces into Nazi Germany until the end of the war.
