Roberto Matta (Roberto Sebastián Antonio Matta Echaurren) was a Chilean painter prominent in Surrealism and twentieth-century abstract art, active in both the Americas and Europe. Trained in architecture and interior design, his travels and contacts with figures such as André Breton, Salvador Dalí and Le Corbusier drew him into the Parisian surrealist circle, where he produced illustrations and texts for the movement’s publications.
From 1938, when he moved from drawing to oil painting, he produced distinctive series such as the “inscapes” and the “psychological morphologies,” in which he sought to depict the human psyche through biomorphic forms and three-dimensional spaces. In the 1940s and ’50s his work incorporated images of machines and anguished figures, reflecting the global political climate.
Matta worked in a wide range of materials — including clay, ceramics, photography and video — and was strongly politically engaged, supporting the government of Salvador Allende; some of his public works were concealed by the military regime and recovered decades later. His legacy includes influence on generations of artists and a notable presence in international collections and exhibitions.
