Vittorio Emanuele III was King of Italy from 1900 to 1946, a member of the House of Savoy whose long reign spanned decisive moments in the country: accelerated industrialization, the First World War, the rise of fascism, and the Second World War. Initially aligned with the policies of Giovanni Giolitti, he saw Italy gain territory after 1918, though frustrated by peace settlements that fed the nationalist sense of a “mutilated victory.”
During the 1920s and 1930s his role became increasingly tolerant of Benito Mussolini’s regime: he accepted the crowns of Emperor of Ethiopia (1936–1941) and King of the Albanians (1939–1943) within the context of fascist imperialism. When Italy entered the Second World War he granted wide powers to the fascist government, but in 1943 he took part in Mussolini’s ouster and signed the armistice with the Allies.
Under pressure from military and political events, he transferred powers to his heir in 1944 and abdicated in 1946 in an attempt to preserve the monarchy in a referendum that instead established the republic. Known for cultural interests—particularly in numismatics, geography, and history—his figure remains controversial for combining dynastic institutional work with political acquiescence toward fascism.
