Georges Gilles de la Tourette was a French physician associated with the Salpêtrière School, known for describing in 1884 the set of symptoms that would become known as Tourette syndrome. He graduated in Poitiers and later served as an intern under Jean-Martin Charcot in Paris, was head of Charcot’s clinic from 1887 to 1889, and joined the team of Fulgence Raymond. His work focused on the study of hysteria, mesmerism and hypnosis, as well as on teaching psychotherapy.
He published works on hypnotism from a medico-legal perspective, clinical studies of hysteria and several treatises on diseases of the nervous system, collaborating with authors such as Paul Richer. In 1884 he described nine patients with convulsive tics, a study that consolidated his scientific notoriety when Charcot began to associate his name with the condition.
His personal life was marked by setbacks: he survived an assassination attempt by a former patient and suffered mental health problems in his final years, eventually being institutionalized in Lausanne, where he died in 1904. Nevertheless, his legacy remains primarily in the clinical recognition of the disorder and his influence on neuropsychiatric research at the end of the 19th century.
