Gilles Villeneuve was a Canadian racing driver of Franco-Canadian origin who became known in Formula 1 for displays of daring and driving skill. Before moving to single-seaters, he built a successful career in snowmobile racing and won titles in Formula Atlantic in the late 1970s, results that opened doors to top teams. He debuted with Ferrari in 1977 and quickly became a central figure for the team, producing memorable races — among them the legendary duel with René Arnoux at the 1979 French Grand Prix.

Known as the “flying driver” for his mix of technique and risk, Villeneuve was also involved in several serious accidents during his career, which shaped his reputation and public perception of his driving. Internal tension at Ferrari, particularly after the incident with teammate Didier Pironi in 1982, and rumors of a move to other teams were part of the context of his final seasons.

Gilles died in an accident during qualifying for the 1982 Belgian Grand Prix, at the age of 32. His legacy endures in the image of a fearless competitor, the respect of rivals, and his influence on later generations, including his son Jacques, who would go on to become a Formula 1 world champion.
