Louis de Bourbon, known as the Grand Dauphin, was the eldest son and apparent heir of Louis XIV of France. Born at the court of Fontainebleau, he early occupied the position of highest prestige after the king and was educated by notable tutors such as Jacques-Bénigne Bossuet. Despite his high rank, his upbringing was marked by strict, emotionally distant methods that produced a reserved temperament and little inclination for academic study. As heir, Louis played a limited political role: he attended the Council of Ministers on occasion but did not exert decisive influence on royal policy. He saw some military service during the Nine Years’ War, distinguishing himself in operations in the Rhineland with the support of marshals and siege engineers, and showed personal courage alongside the troops. He married Maria Anna Victoria of Bavaria and, after becoming a widower, entered into a secret marriage with Marie-Émilie de Joly Choin, a union not recognized by the king. Popular with the people for his generosity, he died before his father and therefore never acceded to the throne; he left a legacy tied to the figure of the traditional heir to the French monarchy and to the image of a discreet, well-meaning prince.
