Greg Swindell is a former American professional pitcher whose Major League Baseball career lasted 17 seasons, from 1986 to 2002. A left‑handed thrower, he served both as a starter and as a reliever for the Cleveland Indians, Minnesota Twins, Cincinnati Reds, Houston Astros, Boston Red Sox, and Arizona Diamondbacks. He was on the Diamondbacks roster that won the 2001 World Series. Before turning professional, he excelled at the University of Texas at Austin, where he ranks among the program’s top pitchers: he leads in strikeouts, holds records for shutouts, and was named Baseball America National Player of the Year in 1985. He was a first‑round pick in the 1986 draft and was quickly promoted to the majors. As a starter he put up strong seasons, including 1988 when he won 18 games and was selected to the All‑Star Game the next year. Later, as a reliever, he adapted to the role and made key postseason contributions, notably during the 2001 campaign. After retiring in 2002, he worked as a college coach and commentator, and was inducted into the College Baseball Hall of Fame in 2008.
