Guglielmo Libri was an Italian count, mathematician, and historian of science whose career combined academic achievements with a lasting scandal. Educated in Pisa, he rose early in mathematics—his first works won praise from figures such as Babbage, Cauchy, and Gauss—and joined the circle of leading French scientists of the period, obtaining posts at the Collège de France and the Sorbonne and receiving the Légion d’honneur. As a historian he published an extensive History of Mathematical Sciences in Italy, a work supported by a large collection of manuscripts he claimed to have assembled. At the same time, while serving as inspector‑general of French libraries, he took advantage of his cataloguing duties to remove and eventually sell rare books and valuable manuscripts, a practice that resulted in tens of thousands of items being sent to England. When the thefts were discovered he fled to London and was tried and convicted in absentia by the French courts; some of the items returned to libraries only after his death and others remain missing. The episode shaped his reputation: acknowledged for scientific and editorial contributions, Libri is remembered above all for the diversion and dispersal of collections that harmed European libraries and the study of the history of science.
