Georg Donatus of Hesse-Darmstadt was the hereditary prince of the House of Hesse and of the Rhine, a figure of the German aristocracy in the early decades of the twentieth century. The son of Grand Duke Ernest Louis, he received the education and performed the duties typical of dynastic nobility, marrying in 1931 Princess Cecilie of Greece, with whom he had four children. That union reinforced ties between European royal branches and placed Georg Donatus within the circle of reigning houses that continued to hold social and representative roles during the Weimar Republic and the rise of Nazism. In 1937 he and his wife joined the Nazi Party, a fact that situates his biography within the troubled political context of Germany in the years before the Second World War. After the death of his father in October of that year, Georg Donatus was traveling to London for family events when he suffered a fatal air crash near Ostend, Belgium, in November 1937. The accident also killed his wife, two children and his mother. His sudden death ended the direct line of succession and marked the House of Hesse; the tragedy prompted later literary interpretations and speculation, but his legacy remains tied to his dynastic role and to the interwoven European history of royal houses in that period.
