Hermann Rorschach was a Swiss psychiatrist and psychoanalyst whose artistic training informed an innovative proposal for personality assessment. In the early 1910s he began to study inkblots systematically, aiming to turn them into a method of psychological investigation based on perception and apperception rather than on free imagination. In 1921 he published Psychodiagnostics, in which he presented the plates and the conclusions of his clinical experiments. Rorschach originally created 25 plates, later reduced to ten by the publisher; these images were then applied to patients, students and nursing professionals to evaluate projective responses. His work was influenced by the psychoanalytic tradition and by earlier experiments with inkblots, but he proposed his own approach, oriented toward perceptual interpretation. His premature death at 37 interrupted the development of his research, which for some time remained confined to a small circle. After his death the method gradually gained international recognition, culminating in the creation of institutions and conferences dedicated to the test and in translations and editions of his writings.
