Hermann Weyl was a German mathematician whose work had a major influence on twentieth‑century mathematics and theoretical physics. Rooted in the Göttingen tradition, he conducted research in analysis, number theory, Lie groups and differential geometry, making decisive contributions to the formalization of fundamental concepts. His work crossed disciplinary boundaries: he published technical treatises and popular expositions on space, time, matter, symmetry and the philosophy of science. He was among the first to seek a unification of general relativity and the laws of electromagnetism, proposing ideas that anticipated later developments in mathematical physics. Weyl played a key role at the Institute for Advanced Study in Princeton, helping shape an integrated and international vision of scientific research. His legacy includes influential books — among them works on invariant theory, the classical groups and symmetry — and a wide range of technical results that continue to guide investigations in pure mathematics and theoretical physics.
