Ivan Sergeievitch Turgenev was one of the most important novelists and short‑story writers of 19th‑century Russia, known for introducing Russian literature to Western Europe. The author of A Sportsman’s Sketches (Memories of a Hunter), a work that defined Russian realism by portraying rural life and the injustices of serfdom, Turgenev also published influential novels such as Rudin, A Nest of Gentlefolk, On the Eve and, above all, Fathers and Sons, which coined the term “nihilist” while depicting the generational and ideological conflicts of his era. Trained in philosophy and deeply influenced by the German intellectual milieu, he combined lyrical sensibility with social analysis, shaping complex characters and moral dilemmas against a backdrop of historical change. His prose, praised by critics and writers such as Henry James and Vladimir Nabokov, was notable for its formal clarity and delicate psychological insight. Politically and socially moderate, Turgenev embraced a liberal outlook, avoiding radicalism, and endured censorship and internal exile because of his positions. He spent much of his adult life in Western Europe, where he built his international reputation. Turgenev’s literary output remains central to the Russian canon, influencing subsequent generations of prose writers and literary critics.
