Jacques Maritain was a French philosopher of Catholic (Thomist) orientation, author of more than sixty works that influenced the renewal of Thomism in the twentieth century and the thought of Christian Democratic movements in various regions. Trained in philosophy with advanced study in biology, his intellectual development passed through Bergson and a decisive encounter with Saint Thomas Aquinas, whose legacy he systematized and defended against modernist trends. Publications such as Elements of Philosophy became reference texts in Catholic seminaries.

Over the course of his career he taught at European and North American institutions, including the Pontifical Institute of Mediaeval Studies in Toronto and universities in the United States, and took an active part in political and social debates: he criticized modernism, developed the proposal of "integral humanism," and opposed the Vichy regime during the Second World War, becoming involved in efforts to rescue persecuted academics.

After the conflict, he served as France’s ambassador to the Holy See (1945–1948) and, in later years, drew closer to the Fraternity of the Little Brothers of Jesus. His thought, grounded in Aristotle, Thomas Aquinas and Thomist commentators, upholds philosophy as a science and continues to be studied in centers and associations devoted to his work.
