Jan Marius Romein was a Dutch historian, journalist and philologist whose work influenced historiography and the popularization of history in the Netherlands. Initially shaped by Johan Huizinga and Marxism, he became known as a translator, editor and author of studies on Dostoevsky, Byzantium and the writing of medieval Dutch history. His collaborative work with his wife Annie Romein‑Verschoor popularized narratives of Dutch history, reaching wide circulation and translations into several languages. Appointed professor at the University of Amsterdam in 1939, Romein maintained vigorous academic and journalistic activity despite Nazi persecution: he was briefly imprisoned during the occupation and resumed teaching and research after the war. In 1937 he published the well‑known reflection on technology and progress titled "The Dialectic of Progress," which introduced the idea of the "law of the disadvantage of the initial advantage." In the postwar years he promoted the theoretical study of history as a discipline and devoted his final years to a synthesis on Europe from 1889 to 1914, a work noted for integrating political, economic and cultural dimensions. His legacy includes contributions to historiography, historical popularization and public memory, as well as posthumous recognition for actions to protect persecuted people during the occupation.
