Jean Puy was a French painter associated with Post-Impressionism and Fauvism, active in the early 20th century. Trained in Lyon and Paris, he attended the Académie Julian and the studios of Gustave Moreau, where he met artists such as Matisse and Derain; he exhibited at the 1905 Salon d'Automne, an event linked to the emergence of Fauvism. His early work shows strong colorism, simplified forms and influences from Gauguin and Cézanne, though without the radicalism of the movement’s leaders. At his height between 1900 and 1905 he gained recognition through salons and galleries—most notably the support of Berthe Weill and representation by Ambroise Vollard—which placed his work in important collections, including Russian and Swiss ones. He also worked in ceramics and decoration, collaborating with André Metthey’s studio until 1910. After a period of experimentation, between 1910 and 1914 Puy moved toward more complex compositions, and after the First World War he developed an intimate style of painting with a personal palette and a drawing visible beneath the color. His work, represented in museums in France, Switzerland and Russia, is characterized by attention to the direct sensation of nature and by a balanced relationship between color and drawing.
