Jean Vuarnet was one of the defining names in 20th‑century alpine skiing, known both as an Olympic champion and as an entrepreneur in the world of winter sports. Emerging competitively in the late 1950s, he won national titles in France and the bronze medal at the 1958 World Championships, reaching the peak of his career with the gold in the downhill at the 1960 Winter Games. His victory became noted for his pioneering use of the crouched position—the so‑called “tuck”—and for being the first Olympic champion to win on metal skis.
After retiring from competition, Vuarnet worked as a coach and administrator: he led the Italian ski team (1968–1972) and served as vice‑president of the French federation, and he took part in developing the Avoriaz resort and the Portes du Soleil region, contributing to the infrastructure of snow tourism. The author of books on skiing technique, he also went into the optics business by lending his name to a brand of sunglasses and accessories aimed at athletes.
His personal life included tragic episodes that marked his career and prompted him to address and mediate family matters publicly. Recognized for technical innovations and for leaving a legacy as an athlete, coach and entrepreneur connected to skiing, Vuarnet remains a historical reference in the sport.
