Joanna McClure is an American poet associated with the San Francisco Renaissance and the Beat Generation. Active since the 1950s, she wrote prolifically in artists’ notebooks, producing a body of poems that scholars say rivals the volume of Beat authors, although much of her work remained private for long periods. Born Jo Ann Kinnison and raised in a rural environment in Arizona, McClure lived in various cities in Mexico and Central America before returning to study literature and history at the University of Arizona. In the mid-1950s she became part of San Francisco’s literary scene, socializing with figures such as Allen Ginsberg, Robert Duncan, and other poets and artists tied to the beatnik milieu. She published collections over the decades, including Winter Solstice and Extended Love Poem, and her work was gathered in Catching Light: Collected Poems of Joanna McClure (2013). In addition to her poetic work, she took an interest in early childhood education, maintaining a career marked by the interplay between literary creation and community life.
