Johann Sigismund was Prince-elector of the Margraviate of Brandenburg (1608–1619) and became Duke of Prussia in 1618, after years acting as regent of the duchy because of Albert Frederick’s mental illness. A son of Joachim Frederick, he expanded his domains through the Treaty of Xanten (1614), when he received Cleves, the County of Mark and Ravensberg, and he was active in diplomatic dealings with the Polish court concerning Prussian vassalage.
His reign is chiefly marked by religious matters: originally Lutheran, he converted to Calvinism—formalizing the Reformed communion in 1613—and at one point proposed a mass conversion of the population. Strong Lutheran resistance, including from his wife Anna of Prussia, led him in 1615 to abandon that policy and, in practice, establish a confessional coexistence that allowed choice between Lutheranism and Calvinism.
Married to Anna of Prussia, he left numerous children, among them significant successors such as George William, who succeeded him in Brandenburg. His political and religious legacy divided the region between two confessions, shaping the confessional dynamics of northern Germany in the following decades.
