John Joseph Gotti Jr. was an Italian-American Mafia boss who led the Gambino family, one of the most influential criminal organizations in the United States, particularly during the 1980s and early 1990s. Raised in poverty in the Bronx and Brooklyn, Gotti rose through organized crime as an enforcer and manager of illegal operations in Queens, noted for his ability to raise large sums for the family and for his ties to mentors such as Aniello Dellacroce. In December 1985 Gotti ordered and took part in the murder of boss Paul Castellano, a move that allowed him to assume control of the Gambino family and consolidate power over a wide network of extortion, illegal gambling, loan sharking and other crimes. Unlike many of his peers, he cultivated a high public profile: he became known as the “Dapper Don” for his flashy style and as the “Teflon Don” after a series of acquittals in the 1980s, later attributed to jury tampering and witness intimidation. Gotti’s downfall accelerated when his underboss Salvatore “Sammy the Bull” Gravano chose to cooperate with the FBI and testify against him. In 1992 he was convicted of multiple crimes, including homicide and racketeering, and sentenced to life in prison without parole. He served his sentence in federal facilities until his death in 2002 from throat cancer. Gotti’s legacy is ambiguous: on one hand he came to symbolize the height of Mafia power in the U.S. and the media visibility of organized crime; on the other, his exposure and the subsequent cooperation of insiders contributed to the institutional weakening of the Cosa Nostra in the following decades.
