Jonas Edward Salk was an American physician, virologist, and epidemiologist best known for developing the first effective vaccine against poliomyelitis, the Salk vaccine. His choice of an inactivated vaccine—safer than the live alternatives then under development—changed poliomyelitis control from the mid-1950s onward and helped dramatically reduce epidemics that had left thousands of children paralyzed or dead. Active at research centers in New York, Michigan, Pittsburgh, and California, Salk led large clinical trials in 1954 involving about one million children, and in 1955 his vaccine was declared safe and widely adopted. In 1960 he founded the Salk Institute for Biological Studies, which remains a leading center for biomedical research. Throughout his career he used HeLa cell lines in experimental work and, in later decades, devoted efforts to developing vaccines against AIDS and promoting ideas he called "biophilosophy," integrating biological, social, and ethical perspectives. Known for refusing to patent his vaccine, Salk is remembered both for his direct impact on public health and for the institutional and intellectual legacy he left in biomedical research.
