Julien Benda was a French essayist, cultural critic, and philosopher best known for La Trahison des clercs (1927), a work that crystallized his denunciation of the politicization of intellectuals. Born into a well-to-do family, he abandoned business life after his family’s enterprises failed in 1913 and thereafter lived solely by his writing. His output blends literary criticism, philosophical essay, and historical reflections on the moral mission of men of the mind. A conservative in aesthetic matters, Benda was a staunch opponent of Bergsonism, deploying Cartesian arguments and French classicism in works such as Le Bergsonisme (1912). A defender of intellectual independence, he argued that the “clercs” — a term he used to emphasize the dignity of the intellectual task — should uphold universal values such as truth, justice, and liberty, and reject the passions of class, race, or nation. Difficult to place politically, he was a Dreyfusard and a critic of the Action Française, fascism, and Nazism; yet late in life he took controversial stances by expressing support for the Soviet Union and for Soviet state trials, while not joining the Communist Party. His legacy lies in defending an intellectual ethic committed to universal principles and in criticizing the ideological instrumentalization of culture.
