Kamal Haasan is an Indian filmmaker and politician, renowned for his long career as an actor and for multiple roles across the South Indian film industry. He has appeared in more than 250 films in Tamil, Telugu, Malayalam, Hindi, Kannada and Bengali, and has also worked as a director, screenwriter, producer, playback singer and lyricist. His training in the performing arts began in childhood on film sets and in theatre companies, which also led him to technical roles such as makeup, editing and choreography.

Known for innovation and his interpretive versatility, Haasan has received honors including the Kalaimamani (1978), Padma Shri (1990), Padma Bhushan (2014) and the French Order of Arts and Letters (Knight, 2016). He was a pioneer in turning fan clubs into welfare associations and has served as an ambassador for social campaigns, including initiatives advocating for the rights of people living with HIV.

In 2018 he founded the Makkal Needhi Maiam party and, in 2025, took office as a member of the Rajya Sabha representing the state of Tamil Nadu. In addition to his artistic and political work, he edited the magazine Maiam and is the author of poems and books, building a multifaceted legacy in cinema, culture and public life in India.
