Klaus Mann was a German writer and anti-fascist activist, the son of the celebrated novelist Thomas Mann and a central figure in the literature of German intellectual exile. His literary and journalistic output, along with his editorial work, placed him at the heart of cultural debates against Nazism in the 1930s and 1940s.
An editor and promoter of exile initiatives, he co-founded and edited the magazine Die Sammlung (1933–1935), aimed at gathering voices of the German intelligentsia scattered across Europe. In partnership with his sister Erika he co-authored Escape to Life, an important account of the fate of artists and intellectuals who fled the Third Reich.
His best-known work is the novel Mephisto (1936), a critical fiction about an actor’s complicity with the Nazi rise to power; the book provoked legal controversy and remained restricted for decades. Beyond fiction, Mann took an active part in cultural resistance: he left Germany in 1933, worked in the United States during World War II and served in counterintelligence units.
Klaus Mann’s life was marked by opposition to totalitarian regimes, cultural activism in exile and a body of writing that documented and criticized the moral collapse of German society under Nazism.
