Kylie Jacqueline Masse is a Canadian swimmer specializing in backstroke, known for her results at World Championships and the Olympic Games. She became the first Canadian woman to win a world title in swimming when she took gold in the 100 m backstroke in 2017, a race in which she also broke a world record that had stood for eight years. She successfully defended that title in 2019 and added a third world gold in 2022 in the 50 m backstroke. At the Olympic Games, Masse is a five-time medalist, with podium finishes at three consecutive editions — a rare achievement among Canadian swimmers. Her rise to the elite level followed rapid development at the University of Toronto, where she was named university swimmer of the year in 2015 and 2016, and she played a central role in raising the standard of Canada’s backstroke events. Beyond her world and Olympic titles, Masse has collected medals at the Commonwealth Games and the Pan Pacific Championships, and she holds the Canadian record for most World Championship medals, in both short-course and long-course pools, with twenty-one podium finishes. Her legacy includes helping to establish Canada as a competitive force in backstroke and inspiring a new generation of swimmers in the country.
