Lawrence Tibbett was one of the most celebrated American baritones of the first third of the 20th century, with an established career at the Metropolitan Opera, where he sang principal roles more than 600 times between 1923 and 1950. Known for a large, dark-toned voice—at times approaching a bass—he was noted for combining power and subtle dynamic shading, earning particular acclaim in roles such as Ford in Falstaff and Tonio in Pagliacci.
Beyond opera, Tibbett worked in film and radio, recording exclusively for Victor/RCA and appearing in Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer films at the start of the sound era. His versatility also took him to musical theatre and to international engagements in London, Paris, Vienna and Australia.
An advocate for performers’ rights, he was a cofounder of and long-serving president of the American Guild of Musical Artists, a union that became influential for singers and solo musicians in the United States. His studio and live recordings from the 1920s and 1930s are often cited among the finest vocal performances of that era.
Tibbett’s public career combined artistic prestige with popular entertainment, leaving a legacy in both recordings and organizational work on behalf of performers.
