Leo Varadkar is an Irish politician who held senior government positions between 2011 and 2024, notably serving twice as Taoiseach (2017–2020 and 2022–2024) and as Tánaiste (2020–2022). A member of Fine Gael since his youth, he served as a TD for the Dublin West constituency from 2007 to 2024 and held several ministerial portfolios, including Transport, Health and Social Protection. Trained in medicine at Trinity College Dublin, he worked as a doctor before devoting himself full time to politics, an aspect of his public image that emphasized his technical background and rapid parliamentary rise. Economically positioned on the centre‑right, he supported free‑market policies, tax cuts and welfare reforms. On social issues, he played a prominent role in the campaigns for same‑sex marriage and the liberalisation of abortion laws, positions that made him a central figure in Ireland’s recent social changes. In 2017 he became the first Irish head of government of Indian ethnic descent and the first openly gay Irish national leader, facts that raised his international profile. His leadership coincided with periods of party turbulence and seat losses in the 2020 elections, followed by coalition agreements that involved rotation of offices between the main parties. He resigned as party leader and as Taoiseach in 2024 and left parliamentary life the same year, marking the end of an influential decade in Irish politics.
