Louis Jacques Mandé Daguerre was a French painter, set designer, physicist and inventor whose central contribution was the development of the daguerreotype, the first commercially recognized photographic process. After partnering with Joseph Nicéphore Niépce, Daguerre refined silver-plate techniques and introduced the use of iodine, shortening exposure times and, crucially, discovering a “fixing” method using a saline solution that made images permanent. His career combined artistic work—especially in the diorama—and technical invention. Facing financial difficulties and guarding parts of his method as a secret, Daguerre negotiated with the French government; in 1839 the process was announced publicly and transferred to the state, a move that secured his notoriety. The daguerreotype marked a turning point in nineteenth-century visual practices and paved the way for the development of photography, although other inventors, such as William Henry Fox Talbot, simultaneously contributed alternative processes. Daguerre’s legacy lies both in technical innovation and in the social and institutional dissemination of early photography.
