Louise Abbéma was a French painter, sculptor and printmaker associated with the Belle Époque, whose work ranged from academicism to touches of Impressionism. She trained in Paris with masters such as Charles Chaplin, Carolus-Duran and Jean-Jacques Henner, which refined her technique in oil, watercolor and pastel. She became known for portraits of actors and actresses from the Comédie-Française and for numerous portraits of high-society figures. Abbéma maintained an artistic and personal relationship with the actress Sarah Bernhardt, to whom she dedicated works and medallions exhibited at the Salon, where she participated regularly from 1874 until 1926 and received an honorable mention in 1881. She also produced decorative painting, floral scenes, frescoes and prints, expanding her practice beyond formal portraiture. Placed within the transformations of the late nineteenth century, her depictions of women—sometimes androgynous and cast in intellectual roles—engaged with the emergence of the so-called “New Woman.” Although less remembered today than some contemporaries, Abbéma left work displayed in salons and international exhibitions, helping to broaden the presence of women in the visual arts of her time.
