Lynndie England is a former reservist in the United States Army known for her involvement in the Abu Ghraib prisoner abuse scandal during the Iraq War. A member of the 372nd Military Police Company, she was one of 11 people convicted in 2005 of war crimes related to the humiliation and mistreatment of detainees, cases that received widespread attention after the release of shocking photographs. Convicted of conspiracy and maltreatment of prisoners, England was sentenced to three years in prison and given a dishonorable discharge; she served 521 days and was released on parole in 2007. During the trials there was controversy over orders from superiors and the context of the images, and her case fed public debate about military responsibility, rules of engagement, and interrogation practices. After serving her sentence, she returned to her community in West Virginia, published a memoir about the episode, and sought to resume civilian life, reporting mental health problems. England’s case remains a symbol in discussions about military ethics, oversight, and individual consequences in conflict operations.
