Malcolm Bligh Turnbull is an Australian politician, lawyer and businessman who served as the 29th Prime Minister of Australia from 2015 to 2018. He earned Arts and Law degrees from the University of Sydney and was a Rhodes Scholar at Oxford. Before entering politics he worked as a journalist, lawyer, banker and venture investor. He also served as chair of the Australian Republican Movement and was one of the leaders of the “Yes” campaign in the 1999 referendum on becoming a republic. He was elected member for Wentworth in 2004 and served as Minister for the Environment in the Howard government. Over the course of his party career he led the Liberal Party on two occasions and faced notable internal challenges, including the contest with Tony Abbott in 2009 and the crisis that ended his leadership in 2018. As prime minister he prioritized innovation and science, launching the National Innovation and Science Agenda, and promoted infrastructure projects and support for startups. During his second term he led the campaign in favor of same‑sex marriage and announced major energy projects such as Snowy Hydro 2.0. After leaving Parliament he became a technology adviser and began criticizing the direction of his party and the influence of major media on public debate.
