Martin Balsam was an American actor recognized as one of the great character actors of 20th‑century film, theatre, and television. Trained at the Dramatic Workshop in New York and an early member of the Actors Studio, he built a steady stage career, winning the Tony Award for Best Actor in a Play for You Know I Can't Hear You When the Water's Running (1968). He maintained a constant presence on stage, balancing work on Broadway and off‑Broadway for decades. In film, he was noted for memorable supporting roles: Juror #1 in 12 Angry Men (1957), detective Milton Arbogast in Psycho (1960), and Arnold Burns in A Thousand Clowns, a performance that earned him the Academy Award for Best Supporting Actor (1965). He also appeared in classics such as Breakfast at Tiffany's, The Carpetbaggers, Catch‑22, The Taking of Pelham One Two Three, Murder on the Orient Express, and All the President's Men. On television, he had recurring and long‑running roles, including Dr. Milton Orloff on Dr. Kildare and Murray Klein on Archie Bunker's Place. Known for his versatility and skill in creating believable characters, he left a legacy as a celebrated character actor frequently praised by critics.
