Karl Martin Lauer is a former West German athlete who specialized in sprints and hurdles, prominent in the 1950s and 1960s. His greatest individual achievement came in the 110 metres hurdles, where he became European champion and set a world record, establishing himself among the leading hurdlers of his era. Beyond individual success, he played a decisive role in team events, joining fast relay squads that also set records. In 1960 he was part of the United Team of Germany’s 4×100 m relay that was declared Olympic champion after the disqualification of the United States team; the quartet equaled the standing world record with a time of 39.5 seconds. Earlier, Lauer had already been recognized by the specialist press, being named Track & Field News Athlete of the Year in 1959 in recognition of his consistency and international performances. His legacy lies both in his individual milestones in the 110 m hurdles and in his contribution to the German tradition in team sprint events, serving as a reference for subsequent generations in European athletics.
