Charles-Louis de Secondat, Baron de La Brède and Montesquieu, was one of the leading thinkers of the French Enlightenment, noted for articulating the theory of the separation of powers that underpins many modern constitutions. Born into a noble family, he trained in law and served in judicial posts in Bordeaux before devoting himself to writing and the comparative study of societies. A versatile author, he published social satires such as Persian Letters (1721) and historical essays, but his major work, The Spirit of the Laws (1748), carried out a broad analysis of law, politics, economics and geography, seeking general principles to explain human institutions. That work influenced jurists, legislators and philosophers through its comparative and interdisciplinary approach. Travels across Europe, especially to England, deepened his liberal outlook and his critique of absolutism and clerical power. Recognized for combining classical scholarship with modern methods, Montesquieu left a lasting legacy in the social sciences and Western constitutionalism.
