Muhammad Iqbal was a South Asian Muslim thinker, poet, and politician whose work deeply influenced Islamic thought and early-20th-century political life. Educated in philosophy and law in Europe, he combined mastery of Persian, Arabic, and English with poetic output in Urdu and Persian — notably Asrar-e-Khudi, Rumuz-e-Bekhudi, and Bang-e-Dara — works that secured his reputation as one of the leading poets in those languages in the 20th century.
As a religious philosopher, he called for a renewal of Islamic thought; his lectures on the reconstruction of religious thought in Islam influenced intellectuals and Muslim leaders. In politics, he worked within the context of the British Raj, held a seat on the Punjab legislative council, and took part in bodies of the All-India Muslim League, presenting in 1930 a formulation that shaped discussion about the political representation of Muslim populations in northwestern India.
His legacy is twofold: literary — for the originality and reach of his poetry in Urdu and Persian — and political-intellectual — for articulating a cultural and political vision for the subcontinent’s Muslims that later influenced nationalist movements in the region.
