Oksana Sergeyevna Baiul is a retired Ukrainian figure skater, known for her early successes on the international stage. Coached by trainers including Halyna Zmievska, she rose to prominence in the 1990s by winning the 1993 World Championship and the gold medal at the 1994 Winter Olympics in Lillehammer, becoming the first Olympic champion to compete under the flag of Ukraine and a sporting symbol for the newly independent country. After winning Olympic gold, Baiul moved to the United States and devoted herself to the professional show and ice-tour circuit, as well as appearing on television programs and at charity events. Her career also included publications: in 1997 she released two works, among them an autobiography.
