Paul John Keating is an Australian politician who served as the 24th Prime Minister of Australia from 1991 to 1996, representing the Labor Party. Before leading the government, he rose to prominence as Treasurer in Bob Hawke’s cabinet (1983–1991), during which he was one of the architects of major macroeconomic reforms: devaluation and floating of the dollar, trade liberalization with tariff cuts, and proposals for tax reform—measures that transformed the country’s economy. Keating was known for his combative style and for an intellectual and culturally distinct profile within the Labor movement; he became notable for advancing economic modernization policies and for promoting a discourse focused on integrating Australia into the Asian context. In 1993 he secured an unexpected electoral victory, remaining in office thanks to a vigorous campaign. However, in his second term his popularity declined amid electoral concerns about the economy, and in 1996 he was defeated by John Howard, ending 13 years of Labor governments. After leaving political office, Keating remained a public figure as a commentator and visiting professor, and he received honorary academic titles in Japan, Singapore, and Australia.
