Peter van de Kamp was a Dutch-born astronomer who settled in the United States, best known for his long tenure as director of the Sproul Observatory at Swarthmore College (1937–1972) and for his work in astrometry — the precise measurement of stellar parallaxes and proper motions. Trained at the University of Utrecht and holding doctorates from the University of California and Groningen, he collaborated on major parallax and proper-motion programs under Samuel A. Mitchell and Harold Alden, and contributed to collective projects that mapped thousands of stellar motions. His public profile rose in the 1960s when he announced detections of “wobbles” in Barnard’s Star that he interpreted as signs of planets. Those claims were later challenged by reanalyses that attributed the effects to variations in photographic plates and instrumentation; the controversy prompted prolonged scientific debate and affected his reputation. He continued to defend the presence of stellar companions and published on the subject into the 1980s. Beyond astronomy, Van de Kamp was active in music — a pianist, violinist and conductor — and linked that interest to academic life by directing the college orchestra and composing. After retiring he returned to the Netherlands, where he served as a visiting professor and spent his final years.
